development history

In 2006, Höegh LNG decided to investigate the opportunity to enter into the FLNG market segment and has since developed a mature technical solution for an FLNG for rich gas in cooperation with large, experienced LNG/offshore contractors as well as shipbuilders. Höegh LNG has invested  300 000 engineering man-hours in the development of the FLNG design covering a large range of operating conditions, water depths, significant wave heights and gas compositions. As sound technical approach and identification of risks with inherent risk management has been the prime focus throughout the development. An engineering basis identifying interfaces, technical, operational, construction and schedule risks ensure a successful project execution.

2006:

  • Performed a Feasibility study for converting a 129 000 m3 LNG carrier to a production vessel

  • Screening of various liquefaction technologies to assess their suitability for FLNG applications

2007:

  • Selected ABB Lummus Global (now CB&I Lummus) Niche technology as preferred liquefaction technology.
  • Initiated a pre-FEED study for a new-built FLNG.

2008:

  • Completed the pre-FEED study
  • Third party reviews of the topsides process plant developed in the pre-FEED.
  • Third party verification of the Niche LNG technology.
  • Initiated the extensive FEED work

2009:

  • Completed FEED - including third party reviews and project risk assessments.
  • Received Approval in Principle by DNV for the complete FLNG solution
  • Developed Operations and Maintenance Philosophies and Commissioning and Start-up
  • procedures.
  • Developed Project Execution Model for the EPCIC phase
  • Optimization Studies for further improvement of performance, efficiency and economics
  • 10+ Client/Field specific studies for clients

2010:

  • KBR selected as the new topside engineering partner
  • Several technical optimisation studies performed together with KBR

 2011:

  • PNG FLNG established together with Petromin of Papua New Guinea and Daewoo of Korea
  • Agreement to perform field specific engineering for an FLNG for the Tamar gas field offshore Israel
  • Woodgroup PSN selected as operations and maintenance partner
